Until 1816, mail was delivered by private carriers operated in conjunction with stage coach service. In 1816, newly appointed postmaster Joseph B. Dodd opened Bloomfield's first US post office on Washington Street [was it still called Samuel Ward Lane then?]. [Are there federally archived records for this facility?]
