The first Methodist church in Greater Bloomfield was formed about 1822. The first services were held at the Cockefair family homestead at 879 Broad Street. Shortly thereafter, the congregation built a wood-frame church on Bay Lane (now Bay Avenue) near the Road to Paterson (now Broad Street) [see map ____]. The building had been built on private property. Under pressure from the landowner, the congregation abandoned the building and built the stucture below.
