Oakes Woolen Mill, about 1905, viewed from Belleville Avenue. The first large employer in Bloomfield was Thomas Oakes, who started a woolen mill near Belleville Avenue in 18__. During the Civil War, demand for the mill's products skyrocketed, making the Oakes family the wealthiest in Bloomfield. The Third River is visible (appearing as dark grass) in the foreground, close to the building.
