Oakes Woolen Mill, about 1905, viewed from Belleville Avenue. The first large employer in Bloomfield was Thomas Oakes, who started a woolen mill near Belleville Avenue in 18__. During the Civil War, demand for the mill's products skyrocketed, making the Oakes family the wealthiest in Bloomfield.
